(not my stash... thank you flikr)
Ahhh make-up. I admit, I'm a little bit of a make-up freak, but I sort of feel insecure in that because while I LOVE the beauty aisle, buying new types, and I definitely wear it every day, all the time.... I remain a cheapskate at heart, and so I don't get to experiment much because I won't buy something new until I have to, and I generally stick with drugstore brands in order to stay in the budget.
And that is why I want to know what YOU like. Please... give any and all advice, or even just what you're currently using that you're satisfied with, or what you know you particularly dislike.
A year or so ago on my old xanga blog I asked people what kind of shampoo and soap and lotion they used, and it was incredible the responses I got. Everyone had an opinion, and often they were opposite.
So... here's my make-up favorites.
Foundation:
I mentioned this on my facebook status the other day. I finally got to try Revlon Colorstay foundation, and I LOVE it.

I really struggle to find a good foundation because my skin is naturally oily (as in, even the strongest dermatologist prescription doesn't dry my face out a bit), and I live in Texas where it's hot and humid for the majority of the year. And then... just to spite me.... it seems like all of the cosmetics companies put out products for dry-skinned people, with nice moisturizing qualities. Well, I'm sure that's all well and good for most of you, I'm sure, but I have plenty of moisture of my own, thank you very much! Revlon, more so than any other product I've tried, keeps my skin from getting oily within hours. It stays on great and blends well. It might be too heavy for those of you that like super light makeup, but for me and my skin, it's perfect. And yeah, it's one of the most expensive drugstore brands, but I will spend on foundation - it's the most important part of my daily routine.
No idea what kind of loose face powder is good - ya'll?
Concealer:
I quite like what I've been using recently - L'oreal Infallible. It doesn't last for 16 hours like it says, but I still like it.
Mascara:
I think I am still on the hunt for a good mascara. It can't be too expensive, because even expensive mascara clumps and has to be thrown out after a few months. I'm pretty good with regular old Maybelline Great Lash. I've tried Maybelline Full & Soft, and if you like light, soft makeup it'd be great for you. I wanted something more though, and right now I'm using L'Oreal's Voluminous, and I like it. I'd take other suggestions. What do you all think?

Blush:
Clare (my high fashion and high-end make up fan friend) bought me this fantastic Nars blush (the color? "Orgasm". Love it). It's nice. I'm not gonna lie. I hope it lasts me a long time. Blush usually does.

Eye liner:
Eh. I've tried a few things and never really found one that I really like, either liquid or pencil. What I do is what a makeup lady at Water-tower Place showed me before I got married. Buy a little angled brush, get it wet, and basically paint it on using eyeshadow, instead of using eye liner. For me, that is more precise and more natural. I like it dark, so I use Maybelline's "Night Sky" eye shadow, which is basically dark...dark black.
Eyeshadow:
No clue what to recommend here. I try a few things, maybelline, clinique, L'Oreal, Cover Girl... and I have no idea what works best. I guess it's just not a priority to me. I take care of the foundation, eye liner, and mascara, and the rest is just fun extra stuff that I don't overly worry about wearing off.
Lipstick/Gloss:
This is my great temptation. I have to avoid the cosmetics section because if something looks fun or is on sale, it will be my downfall. My current favorite is L'Oreal Infallible Lipgloss. It goes on like gloss but the color stays on like lipstick. It doesn't stay very moisturized, so 10 minutes after I put it on I usually top it with something clear or shimmery.

I have to add this in, even though it's not really a cosmetic.
Deodorant:
I believe that it was a group of men that started off producing women's deodorant. There's a definitely attitude of - "must make manly, strong deodorant to combat all that masculine sweat and brawn".... and "must make soft, delicate deodorant for women to let of a lightly flower scent, but not much more because women are, after all, soft and pretty and don't sweat... "
Seriously - it's so hard to find a female deodorant that actually does something for me, because you know what, I SWEAT. And smell. And yes, I would like to remain feminine and fragrant, but you gotta help me out here, deodorant producers!
In any case, there's been a new rash of "clinical strength" deodorant for women, which I am all for. Yes, I know it's got all kinds of chemicals in it, but I consider it worth it. Feel free to recommend an all-natural deodorant for those that are interested, but I'm not buying. ;). I'm currently using Mitchum, and my favorite scent is, oddly enough, Papaya. It doesn't actually smell like papaya.
Now it's your turn. What do you ladies like and recommend?

Ok, I am also a cosmetic junkie! I even have ajn older post on my blog about my faves!
ReplyDeleteMy faves currently are my Bare Escentuals makeup. Been wearing for yrs and LOVE it!
I love too faced lash injection mascara but have recently tried the maybelline XXL mascara and it's awesome! A lot cheaper too than what I was using. I also love the lip liners from ULTA and I use their lip gloss and it stays on! The price is right on those items too!
Ooh, I saw that MAC stuff in your picture. At heart I am a MAC girl. However, not in my pocketbook! The makeup that I am loving now is at Target called "Boots." With an English husband, you should know all about Boots, England's version of Walgreens basically. But the makeup is great! Target also carries a brand called "H.I.P." that I like their lip gloss.
ReplyDeleteAnd I will say to stick with the Voluminous mascara--I've tried all sorts, but it has been my mainstay for years.
I thought no way any deodorant/antiperspirant would work better than Mitchum.
ReplyDeleteI test drove the Secret Clinical Waterproof and my Mitchum ended up in the trash.
The Secret Clinical Waterproof is amazing.
Milani makes a knock-off of the Nars Orgasm.
ReplyDeleteI like Everyday Minerals foundation, Bobbi Brown concealer, and Tarte eye shadow. I have Urban Decay's Potion Primer for under eye shadow and it holds that stuff like nobody's business! MAC eye liner is a staple for me, too.
Voluminous is my go-to mascara, too.
The HIP stuff is by L'oreal.
I'm a cheap make-up snob too. Learn to love coupons. I routinely get my make-up for 50-75% off retail price just by clipping coupons and watching for sales at Walgreens or Rite Aid. You can get some amazingly good deals on name brand stuff if you're patient.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Target usually has clearance makeup on their back end caps. Last week I picked up four tubes of Cover Girl Lash Exact Mascara for $10. That's almost four for the price of one.
I just started using the Degree Woman's Clinical Strength deodorant in Shower Fresh scent - Love it! Been using it 3 days and NO odor whats so ever.
ReplyDeleteAs for makeup, I can't really help as I don't use much - I have rosasca and everything causes flareups.
I love make-up, but I just cannot afford to get what I want.
ReplyDeleteI'm really into Everyday Minerals right now. You can order a free sample kit and only pay shipping, so it ends up being about $3.13. You get 3 foundations, and mine lasted me about 2 months, so you should check into it.
The mascara I'm currently using is Clinique Lash Doubling mascara. It makes my lashes look uh-MAZE-ing, but it flakes, which ticks me off. I'm about to go back to L'Oreal after a brief stint with Great Lash, too.
The other brand from England you mentioned on my blog--was it Rimmel of London? I like that too--especially the lip gloss (I'm a lipstick/lip gloss fanatic)...
ReplyDeleteI've got skin like you... don't ya love it? {wink}
ReplyDeleteWhen I run out of foundation (I currently have 3 full bottles of different ones I rotate through, so it'll be a while) I'll try this one you're recommending.
As for the mascara, I wrote a WFMW a few weeks ago about how I keep my mascara in a fresh consistency. I've been using the same tube of mascara for a year this June!! You can read about it here if you like... http://christyklein.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/wfmw-make-it-last-makeup-tips/
Thanks for all the wonderful recommendations!
I also a stinky sweater, so I looked into the "clinical" OTC deodorants. I looked at their labels and it's the same amount of aluminum zinc as Sure, Suave and Secret. Tripple the price for the same ingredients? I don't think so. I just put on a coat of deo before I go to bed and that has really helped. It sinks into your skins while you're sleeping to help prevent sweat the next day.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what prescription are you using for your skin? I'm using Retin-A and have yet to see a difference so I'm looking for suggestions for something new.
Kacie-
ReplyDeleteWhen I first ordered my Bare Minerals, I got it from QVC. That way if I didn't like it, I could return it. Now, I get it at Ulta or Ebay. Usually I can find the best deals on Ebay! If you try it, let me know if you like it! :)
Oooh, I love make up too. I have already way too much here, so it's a good thing I'm not in the States and tempted to buy new stuff (lipgloss is my downfall, too!) every time I'm out!
ReplyDeleteLet's see, what are my favorites...
Foundation - I love Cover Girl AquaSmooth. I have oily skin, too. Have you tried it? If not, I'd say give it a go. I'll have to try the Revlon stuf, too :-)
Concealer - I'm out of right now. I need to find a new one, I don't have a fave.
Mascara - I do like Full N Soft. The waterproof kind, because my lashes won't hold a curl otherwise. I have to get something that's more of the "soft/natural" look because I have BLOND eyelashes and anything that's darker/heavier just looks weird.
Blush - OOOH, I would love to try NARS Orgasm! I just couldn't justify the expense the last time we were in the States :-) Right now my go-to blush is Jane Blushing Glow. I am not sure they make it anymore. But it's GREAT!
Eyeliner - I don't really use. I think I still have one that I bought before my wedding - almost 9 years ago!!!
Eyeshadow - Jane eyeshadows are GREAT. Lots of colors, and it doesn't take a lot to get some color. I have lots of Clinique eyeshadows I've gotten for Gifts with purchase, and I find that it takes a LOT to actually look like there's anything on my eye! I haven't tried MAC although I should - I think they give you the most bang for your buck. I do have a couple Stila eyeshadows, and they are highly pigmented, too. I'm not crazy about Cover Girl eyeshadows, although one of theirs is my absolute favorite shimmery/highlight color - it's called Champagne.
Lipgloss - I LOVE MAC Lipglass. I have their Viva Glam V and it is the perfect color - love it. I also LOVE Clinique Supergloss. Just a hint of color, but it makes your lips so nice and glossy and feels so good. I also like L'Oreal ColourJuice - tons of colors and stay put for a LONG time.
Anyway, loved reading your post! Love the makeup! :-)
i cant wear makeup. it makes me feel yucky.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was Rimmel of London. I've found a few of their things that I like.
ReplyDeleteSounds like I'm going to have to try the new Secret Clinical deodorant, Maybeline XXL mascara, MAC lipglass, and Covergirl Ultrasmooth foundation.
Of course... I won't buy a new one until my old ones are running out or out of date! :)
I'm way late in catching up on all my blog reading.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna have to try the Clinical Strength deodorants b/c I usually reapply halfway through the day.
Anyway ... I don't do the whole foundation/concealer thing so I can't weigh in on that. But I am a cheap, drugstore makeup user.
I have found that overall, the Maybelline brand is my safest bet with Mascara. I've tried L'Oreal and Covergirl options and always go back to Maybelline. I like their VolumExpress but recently I tried the new Lashblast (it's pink and was on sale!) and have liked it. It has a rubber as opposed to bristle brush and I like the control and lack of clumping that has provided.
I'm a huge eyeliner fan. Here's my drill. I wear pencil eyeliner on my lower lids. It's just a cheap, covergirl something. As long as it glides and you don't have to press too hard, I don't care. But on my upper lids I always use liquid eyeliner. I just think it enhances more definitively. I have found that many kind of peel off or do other dumb things. I have been using a Maybelline liquid eyeliner. Don't know the name but the tbe is widest at the bottom and then becomes skinny at the top of the top - kinda like a really stretched out triangle I guess? This stuff has serious staying power. In fact, I went into the hospital made up from that morning. I didn't have any facewash and was too sick to care. Next morning, all I had to do was get rid of the makeup underneath my eyes (my mascara) and I still had a full line of eyeliner on. Quite the bonus when you are in the hospital with no makeup and sick looking skin:)
Sorry, I'm only catching up now :)
ReplyDeleteIf you're using colourstay then you don't need a powder. Did you read my post about getting it off? Oil cleansers can actually be fantastic for your skin (regardless of skin type) and part of the fun is working out which combination works - I'll hunt around for a forum thread for you.
Also if you're after a mascara rec, I highly recommend Korres. I found it in Sephora and it's amazing - does everything that expensive Diorshow does, but without the hefty price tag and without the crunchyness. The bottle I bought with you in May last year only got replaced last week, so it's definitely value for money. Not to mention it's made my eyelashes visibly longer.
Crazy.
:)
