Collapsing Two Blogs Into One?

Back when I was bored and hardly knew anyone in Dallas and didn't have a car or a baby, I ran three blogs.

Yes, I was very bored.

I shut down one that was that fully dedicated to movies, books, music, etc. I still run this Papua Girl blog about life and another one called The Well Thought-Out Life where I wrestle with things like theology, politics, you know, things that can inspire debate. When I set it up I knew the friends that wanted my daily thoughts did not really want to read my thoughts on McCain, Obama, Eastern Orthodoxy, or life beginning at implantation.

I'm considering collapsing them into one. Back when I was bored and posting all the time, they were really two very different things. But nowadays I don't have time to compartmentalize what I write about. I don't post as much daily random thoughts (hello twitter). I want to write about my daily life and the things I'm grappling with - and just keep it all together, easy to sort and access.

So - I'm considering pulling my other blog into this one.

Or perhaps I should collapse this into The Well Thought-Out Life, because that name has more staying power, whereas I will not be the Papua Girl in Dallas for very much longer.

Thoughts? Advice from people that have changed blogs before?

  1. I think it's a great idea to combine the two. You make a good point about not being the Papua Girl in Dallas for much longer and should, therefore, go with the other name. Or is there a new name altogether that you could use? I've three different blogs at three different stages in my life. I created Bird on a Bare Branch for Mozambique but ended up extending it into my time in Houston, although I think once I leave Houston I'll start a new one.

  2. Hmmm, I don't know. Lately I've been considering moving to two blogs, like you. I have gotten some feedback (specifically from extended family) that they want to see Judah posts without reading my personal musings. Now, I don't think that is necessarily right--I am one person, and all of those thoughts effect each other--but I am still debating doing that for their sake. So, it's hard to say...I see the benefits of having two but understand the ease of having one blog.

And if you do consolidate, I would definitely merge this one into Well Thought-Out Life. How you do that, I have no idea. :)

    1. Yeah, I did it for my readers. It really worked for me. The thing is to keep a readership that is not only family and friends, you need to post consistently. I can't do that anymore on two blogs. And my need to blather on about small daily things on here is gone - it's more general updates. I think the integration for readers would be a lot more workable now than it was four years ago.

I think the splitting of blogs would work for you right now.

  3. I love the idea of having just one ... in fact, i'm 90% sure i'm going to go against all 'business' advice out there and am combining my business and personal life on one blog. that's just me and my style.

and i'm all about simplifying life, so this seems like a great way for you to just maintain and manage one blog instead of two ... go for it! =)

  5. I just wanted to say thanks for your kind comment on my blog earlier this week. I have poked around a little bit and added you to my reader. Can I get a vote? I vote for The Well Thought-Out Life, because a thought-out life has room for the things you say you post here.

My husband got the card catalog for me for Valentine's Day one year. He is good at giving presents. :)

  6. I have no thoughts about this because I'm with you either way. I just RSS your blogs, so I get both. Same difference to me.
